Helix AI Credits
Every Field seat and above includes a monthly allotment of Helix AI Credits — the currency the platform uses to track AI usage when no API key is configured. If you connect your own API keys through the App Marketplace, Helix uses those exclusively — no credits are consumed, no allotment limits apply. The credit system only engages when no key is present for a given user.
FELIX™ and the bureau agents are powered by industry-leading large language models — Claude (Anthropic), OpenAI, Gemini, Groq, and others. The AI is not ours. What Helix provides is the layer on top: the personalities, the operational context, the domain knowledge, the Three Laws, and the role-specific traits that make a world-class language model behave like a seasoned colleague who knows your business. We make the LLMs seem very smart about the thing you actually do.
These are real services that cost real money to run. Claude, OpenAI, and the others charge per token — every query, every proposal, every analysis has an API cost behind it. Helix AI Credits represent what we absorb on your behalf up to your monthly allotment. That's why credits exist, why BYOK matters, and why Enterprise clients — who get their AI completely covered by the platform — pay what they pay.
One important note: Helix AI Credits are platform-exclusive. They can only be used within Helix to power the bureau agents — you cannot use your credit balance to access Claude, OpenAI, or any other AI service directly. If you want direct access to those services outside of Helix, you supply your own API key (BYOK).

Seat-by-seat vs. shared pool
By default, each seat draws from its own credit allotment. Field, Pro, and Team tenants can switch to a shared pool in Settings — all seats contribute their monthly allotment to one tenant-wide total. Shared-pool operations cost approximately 2–3 additional credits per request to account for concurrent-access accounting. The tradeoff: individual seats can't run dry while others sit idle.
How API keys and credits work together
If you configure an API key through the App Marketplace — at the tenant level or the user level — Helix uses it for all AI calls made by that user. No credits are consumed. No limits apply. Keys can be set tenant-wide by an admin or individually by each user. A user-level key takes precedence over a tenant-level key, which takes precedence over the credit system. Users without a configured key draw from the team's credit pool as normal.
Operational grace
Helix never stops an agent mid-task during an active incident. If NIGHTSHADE™ is mid-escalation or a security SOP is in progress and your credits hit zero, the operation completes — unconditionally. The overdraft is logged, your manager is alerted immediately, and the balance is recovered from the next credit purchase. Credits are a billing mechanism, not an operational gate. This behavior can be disabled in Settings if your organization requires strict credit enforcement.
A note on BYOK model quality
Platform AI credits always use Claude — the model the bureau agents were built and tuned on. When you supply your own API key, Helix uses your chosen model for premium requests. The bureau's deliberation structure equalizes outcomes across models. Where quality may vary is in the polish of generated documents: proposals, contracts, and briefings reflect the underlying model's writing ability. For client-facing work, platform credits or an Anthropic key are recommended.

For most service businesses, the monthly credit allotment included with your tier is more than enough for day-to-day operations. Heavy users and all-in adopters who run proposals, contracts, and AI analysis at full throttle may find they want more. Credit blocks exist for them.
Blocks can be allocated to a specific seat or the shared pool. Set to automatic billing and save 20%. Available on all tiers — Starter tenants can purchase blocks instead of or alongside configuring their own API key.
